Sustainable solutions for water scarcity: a review of electrostatic fog harvesting technology
Amid global climate change and population growth, traditional water acquisition methods face challenges. Electrostatic fog harvesting technology offers a novel solution for arid regions, leveraging space charges and electric fields to convert fog into usable water. This article explores the fundamental processes, structure, and enhancement methods of electrostatic fog collectors (EFC), focusing on recent research progress. We offer a prospective perspective on the future research of electrostatic fog harvesting technology, with the aim of facilitating the transition of this technology from scientific research to practical application.
Digital infrastructure construction and corporate innovation efficiency: evidence from Broadband China Strategy
Adopting the Broadband China Strategy as a quasi-natural experiment, we construct a multi-period Difference-in-Differences (DID) model to examine the impact of digital infrastructure construction on corporate innovation efficiency with panel data from Chinese listed companies between 2010 to 2022. Our findings indicate that the development of digital infrastructure significantly boosts corporate innovation efficiency. Mechanistic analysis reveals that financing constraints negatively moderates this innovation impact, while human capital positively moderates it. The effects of the Broadband China Strategy are particularly pronounced in non-state-owned enterprises, non-high-tech enterprises, and firms located in the non-eastern region of China. Our research provides important insights for enterprises seeking to enhance their innovation efficiency, while also offering strong empirical evidence on the role of digital infrastructure in fostering corporate innovation. Our study contributes to the literature on digital economy and innovation, with practical implications for policymakers and firms aiming to leverage digital infrastructure for sustained competitive advantage.
Prime editing: therapeutic advances and mechanistic insights
We are often confronted with a simple question, “which gene editing technique is the best?”; the simple answer is “there isn’t one”. In 2021, a year after prime editing first made its mark, we evaluated the landscape of this potentially transformative advance in genome engineering towards getting treatments to the clinic [1]. Nearly 20% of the papers we cited were still in pre-print at the time which serves to indicate how early-stage the knowledge base was at that time. Now, three years later, we take a look at the landscape and ask what has been learnt to ensure this tech is broadly accessible, highlighting some key advances, especially those that push this towards the clinic. A big part of the appeal of prime editing is its ability to precisely edit DNA without double stranded breaks, and to install any of the 12 possible single-nucleotide conversion events as well as small insertions and/or deletions, or essentially any combination thereof. Over the last few decades, other transformative and Nobel prize-winning technologies that rely on Watson-Crick base-pairing such as PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, RNA interference, and one might say, “classic” CRISPR, were swiftly adopted across labs around the world because of the speed with which mechanistic rules governing their efficiency were determined. Whilst this perspective focuses on the context of gene therapy applications of prime editing, we also further look at the recent studies which have increased our understanding of the mechanism of PEs and simultaneously improved the efficiency and diversity of the PE toolbox.
Advancing robust all-weather desalination: a critical review of emerging photothermal evaporators and hybrid systems
All-weather solar-driven desalination systems, integrating photothermal evaporators with hybrid technologies, present a sustainable, cost-effective, and high-efficiency strategy for freshwater production. Despite significant advancements, previous reviews have predominantly focused on daytime evaporation, neglecting the broader scope of all-weather seawater evaporation. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the current status of all-weather seawater evaporators and their hybrid systems. Initially, the review details the system’s composition and operating principles, as well as the design criteria for high-performance evaporators. It then goes over various common photothermal conversion materials for seawater desalination, with a particular emphasis on those materials tailored for all-weather applications. It also offers an in-depth overview to the developed photothermal hybrid systems for all-weather seawater evaporation, including their working principles, the efficiency of evaporation across the day-night cycle, and their practical applications. Lastly, the existing challenges and potential research opportunities are thoroughly discussed.
The risk effects of corporate digitalization: exacerbate or mitigate?
This study elaborates on the risk effects of corporate digital transformation (CDT). Using the ratio of added value of digital assets to total intangible assets as a measure of CDT, this study overall reveals an inverse relationship between CDT and revenue volatility, even after employing a range of technical techniques to address potential endogeneity. Heterogeneity analysis highlights that the firms with small size, high capital intensity, and high agency costs benefit more from CDT. It also reveals that advancing information infrastructure, intellectual property protection, and digital taxation enhances the effectiveness of CDT. Mechanism analysis uncovers that CDT not only enhances financial advantages such as bolstering core business and mitigating non-business risks but also fosters non-financial advantages like improving corporate governance and ESG performance. Further inquiries into the side effects of CDT and the dynamics of revenue volatility indicate that CDT might compromise cash flow availability. Excessive digital investments exacerbate operating risks. Importantly, the reduction in operating risk associated with CDT does not sacrifice the potential for enhanced company performance; rather, it appears to augment the value of real options.
